ASOG (air support operations group)

In allied air-force doctrine, an ASOG is the air component's organization that supports an Army corps. It includes a corps tactical air control party (TACP) and the appropriate command-and-control architecture. The corps TACP provides air-ground integration, planning and execution capabilities in direct support of the corps.

What an ASOG contains and who it supports

US doctrine, reproduced in the Marine Corps publication MCRP 3-20.1, states that the Air Force provides an ASOG to support a corps when that corps operates as the senior tactical echelon. The group has two defining parts:

• A corps TACP, which handles air-ground integration, planning and execution for the corps.
• The command-and-control architecture needed to link air operations with the corps' ground manoeuvre.

When an ASOG deploys, the same doctrine calls it an expeditionary air support operations group. The name changes with the posture, but the mission of supporting the corps stays the same.

ASOG compared with ASOS, TACP and JTAC

Several related abbreviations appear alongside ASOG in defence documents, and they are not interchangeable.

• ASOS means air support operations squadron. US Air Force terminology treats it as a separate organizational form from the ASOG, as shown in the Air Force allowance standard for vehicles.
• TACP means tactical air control party. It is the element inside the ASOG that works directly with the corps.
• JTAC means joint terminal attack controller, the qualified person who directs close air support from the ground.

Close air support, air-ground integration and command and control are the operational functions these units exist to deliver.

How the term relates to Canadian defence

The Canadian Armed Forces use the squadron form rather than the group form in publicly documented activity. A Department of National Defence article on 2 Wing and Exercise MAPLE STRIKE identifies 2nd Air Support Operations Squadron (2 ASOS) as supporting air-ground integration. It describes the squadron working with Canadian Army JTACs to plan, coordinate and execute close air support missions.

That is the Canadian operational context closest to the ASOG concept. It shows the same mission area in use by the Canadian Army and Royal Canadian Air Force, but under the ASOS name.

What ASOG means for a supplier bidding on Canadian public contracts

ASOG is a unit designation, not a Canadian procurement category, clause or certification. A supplier should not infer a compliance obligation from the acronym alone. Any requirement tied to air-ground integration, TACP equipment, JTAC training or command-and-control systems will be written into the specific solicitation, statement of work, technical standard or contract.

Bid teams reading defence documents should do three things:

• Confirm whether a reference to an ASOG, ASOS or TACP describes the end user or a deliverable.
• Read the statement of work for the exact capability, interoperability or standards language.
• Check whether the reference comes from US or NATO material, where ASOG is the standard form, or from Canadian material, where ASOS is the documented unit type.
