LSS stands for logistic support site. It is a site established to provide logistical support, including support for personnel, equipment, supplies and operations. NATO's glossary of acronyms and abbreviations lists the entry as "LSS: logistic support site" and gives the French equivalent as "site de soutien logistique" (AAP-15 NATO glossary).
The term belongs to NATO military logistics, but it also appears in Canadian defence material. The Department of National Defence uses the form "Logistics Support Sites" for facilities that belong to the North Warning System in Northern Canada. Suppliers who read defence solicitations and related contract documents will meet the term in that setting.
What the NATO glossary says about LSS
The NATO abbreviation glossary is the clearest authority for the expansion. It uses the singular form "logistic support site" and the abbreviation LSS, with the French "site de soutien logistique" alongside it. NATO's official terminology database, NATOTerm, is maintained by the NATO Terminology Office within the NATO Standardization Office. It holds non-classified military terminology relevant to NATO (NATOTerm).
Related NATO logistics site terms
LSS sits alongside other site categories in NATO logistics language. Two related terms are:
- ALSS: advanced logistic support site
- FLS: forward logistic site
The NATO Logistics Handbook uses "ALSS/FLS" in operational-status reporting, which shows that these are recognized site categories within NATO logistics arrangements (NATO Logistics Handbook, 1994).
Logistics Support Sites in the North Warning System
National Defence states that the North Warning System (NWS) includes five Logistics Support Sites across Northern Canada, in addition to long-range and short-range radar sites (National Defence main estimates disclosure).
A Canadian Armed Forces article names the five sites as Iqaluit, Inuvik, Cambridge Bay, Hall Beach and Goose Bay. Technicians use these sites as bases when they travel to the remote radar locations (Maintaining the North Warning System).
Contracts connected to the logistic support sites
The sites have a documented contracting history. A Government of Canada audit report on the NWS states that Frontec Logistics Corp. held a contract to provide services required at the logistic support sites (audit report).
A Canadian labour agreement relating to Nasittuq Corporation also lists "LSS: Logistic Support Site" in an NWS-related context (Nasittuq Corporation agreement). Both documents show that the sites are places where contracted services are delivered.
What LSS means for a supplier bidding on Canadian public contracts
In a solicitation, an LSS is a location or operational facility covered by the requirement. A supplier responding to an NWS or similar defence opportunity must meet the solicitation's own requirements for services, staffing, transportation, maintenance, logistics, security and performance at the named sites.
No universal LSS-specific submission form, certification or mandatory clause applies to every Canadian procurement. Bid teams should read each solicitation closely to see which sites are named and what is required at each one.
