LOGSUMREP stands for logistic summary report. It is a NATO logistics-reporting term, and NATO's glossary of acronyms and abbreviations lists it under that name. The glossary entry is in AAP-15, the Glossary of NATO Acronyms and Abbreviations.

The NATO Logistics Handbook gives the term a specific maritime meaning. There it appears as MNLC LOGSUMREP, the Multinational Logistic Commanders Logistic Summary Report. It is the multinational logistic commander's overall assessment of shore-based logistics supporting multinational maritime forces afloat.

How the multinational logistic commander uses LOGSUMREP

According to the NATO Logistics Handbook, the multinational logistic commander sends the report daily to the maritime component commanders. When necessary, it is forwarded on to the multinational commander.

This gives the report a clear chain of readers. The logistic commander writes it, the maritime component commanders receive it, and the multinational commander sees it when the situation calls for it. Its subject is the state of shore-based logistics, meaning the support on land that sustains the ships and forces at sea.

LOGSUMREP, LOGSUM and LOGREP compared

Three similar acronyms appear in NATO logistics documents, and they are not interchangeable.

  • LOGSUMREP is the logistic summary report. In the maritime usage, it is the multinational logistic commander's daily assessment of shore-based logistics.
  • LOGSUM is the logistic summary. The handbook uses it for a report covering the logistics status and readiness of assigned maritime forces.
  • LOGREP is logistic reporting, the broader system. The 2012 NATO Logistics Handbook describes it as the means of providing timely logistics information and accurate data.

In short, LOGREP is the system, while LOGSUM and LOGSUMREP are specific summary products within NATO's logistics reporting. LOGSUM looks at the status and readiness of forces. LOGSUMREP, in its maritime form, looks at the shore-based support behind them.

LOGFAS and the transmission of logistics reports

NATO also identifies LOGFAS, Logistics Functional Area Services, as a means of transmitting logistics reports. The same 2012 handbook notes that this includes reports sent before a transfer of authority. LOGFAS is therefore the tool side of the picture, while LOGREP and its summary reports are the content.

What LOGSUMREP means for a supplier bidding on Canadian public contracts

LOGSUMREP is NATO operational vocabulary. The NATO sources define it as a report issued by a multinational logistic commander to maritime commanders. They do not define it as a supplier deliverable.

A bid team that meets the term in a solicitation should read the reporting requirements in the solicitation documents themselves. Those documents set out what, if anything, a supplier must provide.

Suppliers who want to follow NATO-related opportunities can use CanadaBuys. Its tender search guidance states that the search covers notices from Government of Canada organizations and from NATO. Current notices are listed on the CanadaBuys tender opportunities page.
