IFS1 is a NATO military abbreviation that expands to indirect fire support. It appears in NATO's Glossary of NATO Acronyms and Abbreviations, which gives the French equivalent as appui-feu indirect. The entry is recorded under the reference PFP(NAAG)D(2003)17. You can read the entry in the NATO acronyms glossary.

The capability behind the abbreviation is central to Canadian land operations. The Canadian Army describes field artillery as the arm that provides and delivers indirect fire in support of the all-arms battle. Suppliers who see IFS1 or the full phrase in a defence document are looking at a term with a settled NATO meaning and an established place in Canadian Army practice.

How NATO records IFS1

NATO maintains NATOTerm as its official terminology database for non-classified military terms. The abbreviation glossary is a separate reference, and it is the source that lists IFS1 as indirect fire support. The bilingual entry reflects the way NATO publishes terminology in English and French, which matches the bilingual character of Canadian federal documents.

NATO also uses related wording. The NATO Interoperability Standards and Profiles (NISP) Baseline 16 describes a Kinetic Indirect Fire Support Information Exchange profile. That profile covers the planning, preparation and execution of kinetic-fire missions in support of land-manoeuvre forces in coalition or federated networks. The NISP Baseline 16 catalogue is the place to read that profile.

Indirect fire support in Canadian Army doctrine

Canadian Army doctrine treats fire support as the coordinated use of land-based and sea-based indirect-fire systems, armed aircraft, offensive information operations and non-lethal munitions against ground targets. It includes field artillery, mortars, naval fire and air-delivered weapons. Two Government of Canada publications set this out: D12-9-3-1E and D12-9-2-3E.

Army unit pages show the same usage in practice:

Where indirect fire support appears in defence capability planning

The Canadian Defence Capabilities Blueprint lists Indirect Fire Modernization as a defence capability area, and it is available through the Defence Capabilities Blueprint.

The clearest project example is Long Range Precision Strike (Land). The project description says the capability is intended to provide responsive, all-weather, precision-guided indirect fire support. Its stated uses are continental defence, NATO-led or FVEY-led operations, and the engagement of adversary high-payoff targets.

What IFS1 means for a supplier bidding on Canadian public contracts

The abbreviation IFS1 does not create a supplier obligation on its own. Any requirement comes from the solicitation itself: the statement of work, technical specification, interoperability requirement, security requirement or contract clause. Bid teams should read those sections closely when indirect fire support is named.

Suppliers working in artillery, fire-control, target-acquisition or related systems should track the Blueprint capability areas and the Long Range Precision Strike (Land) project. Teams that sell into coalition environments should also review the NISP profile for kinetic indirect fire support, since it defines how fire-mission information is exchanged across allied networks.
