FSP stands for forward supply point. It is a NATO military-logistics abbreviation for a forward logistics location from which supplies are distributed closer to deployed or operating forces. NATO's glossary of acronyms and abbreviations, AAP-15, lists the entry as "FSP, forward supply point" under the NATO authority responsible for logistics terminology.
The same glossary gives the French equivalent as point de distribution avancé, or "advanced distribution point." The wording points to the function: distribution, positioned forward. Suppliers are most likely to meet the acronym in allied defence logistics material rather than in general commercial purchasing, and the full expansion is the safest way to read it. The glossary is available in the NATO archives.
Where NATO records the term FSP
NATO maintains an official terminology database, NATOTerm. It holds non-classified military and NATO-related terminology and is kept by the NATO Terminology Office within the NATO Standardization Office. The AAP-15 acronym glossary is the reference that carries the FSP entry.
The entry confirms three things: the acronym, its English expansion and its French equivalent. A glossary names a term without prescribing how the thing is organized or staffed. For that reason, this page limits itself to what NATO records: an FSP is a forward supply point, and its role is tied to distributing supplies near the forces that use them.
FSP compared with FLS and FMA
NATO uses several "forward" logistics terms, and each has its own entry. The NATO Logistics Handbook lists the forward logistics site (FLS) and the forward maintenance area (FMA) separately from the forward supply point.
- FSP: forward supply point, in French point de distribution avancé.
- FLS: forward logistics site.
- FMA: forward maintenance area.
Because NATO treats these as distinct terms, they should not be used as synonyms in a bid response, a technical proposal or a glossary of your own.
The other FSP: forward support point
The same three letters carry a different expansion elsewhere in NATO. A NATO Communications and Information Agency document uses FSP to mean forward support point, in the context of ICT support locations. That is a different expansion from "forward supply point" and belongs to information and communications technology, not to supply distribution.
Anyone reading a NATO-related document should confirm which expansion applies before drawing conclusions about the work involved. A supply-distribution requirement and an ICT support requirement call for very different capabilities.
What FSP means for a supplier bidding on Canadian public contracts
Canadian tender notices are published through CanadaBuys, and the federal open data portal offers a search of CanadaBuys-related datasets. When FSP appears in a solicitation, treat the document itself as the authority on its meaning.
- Check whether the solicitation spells out the acronym. Confirm whether it reads forward supply point or forward support point.
- Do not treat FSP, FLS and FMA as interchangeable in your proposal.
- If the work connects to NATO or allied logistics, mirror NATO's wording, and use the French equivalent, point de distribution avancé, in the French version of a bilingual response.
- Ask a clarification question through the buyer's published process if the acronym is not defined.
